Quilt Canada 2023
June 7-10
Canada’s Largest Quilt Exhibition Hosted in Halifax this June
Quilt Canada 2023, hosted by the Canadian Quilters Association/Association Canadienne de la Courtepointe (CQA/ACC), is being held at the Halifax Convention Centre this June 8-10, 2023, and is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
CQA/ACC’s annual show and conference includes the National Juried Show (NJS), which awards the best of quilting in Canada in several categories, including modern, traditional, and art quilts, and recognizes excellence in machine and hand quilting, sustainability, piecing, innovation, etc.
This year, 139 quilts were juried into the show after hundreds of submissions were received from across Canada and beyond. The award ceremony will be held Wednesday, June 7 at 7 pm, and everyone is welcome. Cash awards, totaling over $30,000, will be announced that evening.
Visitors to Quilt Canada are also invited to vote for the Viewers’ Choice award, which will be announced on Saturday afternoon.
The Halifax show will feature several other concurrent quilt exhibits by Atlantic Modern Quilters, SAQA Atlantic, and Cape Breton quilters. CQA/ACC’s JN Harper Youth Challenge, TrendTex Challenge, plus member and guild quilt challenges will be on display. A sampling of quilts from the Secret Codes: African Nova Scotian Quilts exhibit currently on display at the Dalhousie Art Gallery will also be on view.
A selection of National Juried Show 2021 quilts will be displayed after their appearance at the National Quilt Museum’s exhibit, The Best of Quilting in Canada, near Boston, MA this spring. This will be the first opportunity for most viewers to see these quilts in person, as the NJS 2021 was held virtually. A highlight will be Colette Dumont’s Winter Sunset, which is the 2021 Best of Show award winner.
Although registration for the many workshops is filling up quickly, tickets are available for keynote speakers and lecturers. Visit canadianquilter.com/quilt-canada-2023 for information.
One of the most popular activities at Quilt Canada is shopping the Merchant Mall. The Mall is a great resource, not only for quilters, as sewists, creators, and textile artists of all sorts will find everything they need in all in one place.
Don’t miss this opportunity to see quilting at its finest. The level of design, innovation, and craftmanship on display at Quilt Canada can only be accurately witnessed in person. Photos of these works of art cannot do them justice.
