Halifax to host Liberal Party of Canada 2018 Biennial Convention
Another major event has chosen the new Halifax Convention Centre.
The Liberal Party of Canada today, Jan. 27, announced that the Halifax Convention Centre has been selected to host the 2018 Biennial Convention, April 19-22.
"We continue to attract significant conventions that reinforce Nova Scotia's strengths as a world-class event hosting destination and platform for important conversations," said Premier Stephen McNeil. "I know Nova Scotians will share in my pride and excitement in welcoming this event."
This is the first time Nova Scotia has hosted the national convention, which will attract thousands of attendees from across Canada, generating an estimated $3 million in direct spending.
"Halifax is a connected, innovative and vibrant city," said Halifax Mayor Mike Savage. "We are unparalleled hosts and we look forward to welcoming this and the many gatherings to come in the Halifax Convention Centre.”
Out of the many cities that bid to host the national convention, Halifax stood out for its event hosting expertise, state-of-the-art new convention centre, easy access through an award-winning airport, and ability to offer delegates activities and experiences that extend beyond the convention floor.
"Our new centre is a catalyst for connections between Nova Scotia and the world," said Carrie Cussons, acting president and CEO, Halifax Convention Centre Corp. "This is an exciting win for our community, and we look forward to working together to create a truly unique experience for the Liberal Party and their guests."
Past conventions were held in Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver, with the most recent taking place in Winnipeg.
The Halifax Convention Centre is part of the Nova Centre, a one-million square-foot, mixed-used development including a hotel, financial tower and retail space. It is the largest integrated development project in the province's history. The funding of the convention centre is shared between three levels of government, totalling $169.2 million.
